House, government remain at odds over data protection
bill
Source : The Jakarta Post
Lawmakers are pushing to pass a long-anticipated
law on data protection by June, despite persistent disagreements on key points
and an upcoming recess that will cut deliberations short.
The personal data protection bill, which has been
in the works since 2014 and was put forward for passage by the Communications
and Information Ministry, has become more pressing as the COVID-19 pandemic
drives unprecedented levels of online activity.
Data privacy advocates have urged Indonesia to set
up its own data protection framework, as simply having an email account can
expose an internet user to cybercrime.
But differences in opinion between the government
and legislators were still apparent on Tuesday, weeks before the House of
Representatives goes into recess.
The main point of contention continues to be the
design of a planned data protection agency. The government has proposed that
the agency be established under the Communications and Information Ministry,
borrowing from similar arrangements in Singapore and Malaysia.

partnership

Indonesia's submarine KRI Alugoro-405 is a testament to
the strategic partnership between Indonesia and South Korea in defense
cooperation, Indonesian Defense Forces
(TNI) Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto has said. The KRI Alugoro-405 was built
by Surabaya-based shipbuilding company PT PAL Indonesia in cooperation with
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), a South Korean shipyard and
marine technology equipment company.
“What’s in front of us right now is a proof of the
greatness and love of the people for the nation as well as love for advanced
technology and science. It is such a great work of strategic partnership
between Indonesia and South Korea,” Tjahjanto remarked at the inauguration of
KRI Alugoro-45 at Selat Lampa port, Natuna district, Riau Islands on Tuesday.
Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Noer was officially installed as
the first commander of KRI-Alugoro-405 on Tuesday.
The commissioning of KRI Alugoro-405 is part of TNI’s
efforts to support the modernization of primary weapons defense systems, as
planned by the Defense Ministry, to meet the needs of the 2024 Minimum
Essential Force (MEF), Tjahjanto informed.

Police facing most human rights lawsuits: Komnas HAM
Source : Antara
The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has
disclosed that the police have faced the most human rights lawsuits in
2016-2020, followed by corporations and regional governments.
"Police faced the highest number (of human rights lawsuits).
There are legal cases, but the police did not handle it appropriately,” Komnas
HAM chief Ahmad Taufan Damanik said during a hearing with Commission III of the
House of Representatives here on Tuesday.
The commission, he said, has recorded 1,992 human rights
lawsuits against the police that include alleged slow response to a case,
criminalization, mistreatment, and non-procedural legal process.
However, police have been the most responsive institution
to Komnas HAM's inquiries over alleged human rights abuses by the institution.
"For instance, the case of Herman in East
Kalimantan. The (East Kalimantan) police chief immediately met Komnas HAM's
summons to explain the incident. The police have imposed professional as well
as legal sanctions against the perpetrator," he elaborated.

Minister projects visitor influx at tourist destinations

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin
Uno is optimistic that local communities will still throng Indonesia’s tourism
destinations despite the government’s ban on the homecoming exodus, locally
called “mudik”, during Idul Fitr 2021.
"'Mudik’ has this year been prohibited, but tourism
destinations will remain crowded. Hence, health protocols must be well-prepared,"
Uno noted while opening the national dialog on “The Banten’s Cultural Arts and
Creative Economy in Social Justice Perspective” here on Tuesday.
During the dialog focused on boosting tourism through
cultural arts and creative economy by applying inclusive social justice
practices and women-child friendly approaches, Uno called on the regional
administrations to prepare their tourism destinations to welcome tourists
during Idul Fitr in accordance with the outlined health protocols to stem the
transmission of COVID-19.
“In this last one year, the tourism sector plunged and so
did the economy. Major impacts (due to the pandemic) hit people,” he pointed
out.
Hence, Uno is upbeat about a revival in the tourism and
creative economy sectors through the application of stringent health protocols
and improvement of ongoing COVID-19 testing and vaccination.
Export recovery and government reform for Indonesia's
future
Source : The Jakarta Post
The global economy has recovered from the
rock-bottom level it reached last year. If we look at two main indicators for
global recovery, the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and global export
performance, both recorded a continued upward trend.
As per end March, most countries have reached a
level above the PMI threshold of 50, indicating that the manufacturing sector
started growing in the second half of 2020. The figures are in line with the
PMI trajectory in Japan, one of Indonesia’s major export destinations.
PMI recovery has had a positive impact on the
export performance of emerging markets with the trajectory headed northward.
India and Indonesia showed significant improvements from rock-bottom levels,
while China has emerged as a major driver of trade recovery, as it was
relatively unaffected compared to other countries in terms of export growth.
As a result of the improvements in Indonesia’s
major trade partners, commodity prices recovered from the deep contraction in
the first half of 2020, with the rebound driving improvements in export
performance. Export value reached $15.27 billion in February, up 8.56 percent
year-on-year (yoy) compared to 12.24 percent yoy in January. The annual
increase was due mostly to the relatively higher global commodity prices as
export volume reportedly shrank. To be more specific, agriculture exports grew
3.16 percent yoy while mineral exports grew 7.53 percent yoy.
11,000 People Lost Pre-employment Card Membership
Source : Tempo.Co
The management of the Pre-Employment Card Program has
revoked the membership of around 11,000 people from the 12th batch. Their
memberships were revoked because they did not purchase the first training
package within 30 days after being elected as beneficiaries of the
Pre-employment Card.
"This is so regretful. Many people want to join but
do not get the opportunity, but the chosen ones wasted the opportunity to
improve their skills and competencies, and lost a chance to get social
assistance," Louisa Tuhatu, head of communications of the Pre-Employment
Card Program Management, told reporters on Tuesday, April 6.
Louisa reminded that the deadline for purchasing the
first training package for batch 13 is Thursday, April 8, 23:59. The management
noted that there are some 12,000 people from the 13th wave who have not
purchased the first training package.
"We hope they can take advantage of the remaining
time to immediately purchase training via the seven digital platforms,"
said Louisa.
